Aneurin Bevan |
This extract will describe the National Health Services (NHS).
National Health Service |
It was started in 1948 by the Health Secretary, Aneurin Bevan. His ambition was to provide health services to all people, irrespective of their standing or financial status. The NHS is funded by general taxation, so that the contributions made by tax payers are commensurate with their incomes. There are many services which are provided by the NHS: emergency and urgent care, hospital services, pharmacies, GP, dental and ophthalmic services. Problems that have dogged the NHS for a number of years include lack of funding and staff shortages. Both these have resulted in long waiting lists for various services.
