In the UK there are a large number of sporting events held in various locations around the country.

Horse racing is also popular, and some of the classic races include the Grand National, at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool. This race has been held annually since 1839. Royal Ascot dates back to 1711, and is a major event in the racing calendar, while another prestigious race, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was first held in 1819.
