Sports in the UK: Wimbledon

Wimbledon is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, started in 1877.

It is one of the most popular tournaments, attracting many spectators from the UK and around the world.  The competition is held annually for two weeks, commencing towards the end of June, at the All England Club in Wimbledon, a London suburb.

Famous players have included Pete Sampras and Venus Williams, both from USA, but British winners include Fred Perry (1936) and Virginia Wade (1977).

There is a strict dress code for players at the Club, requiring them to wear white.

This year’s championship started on 20 June and lasts until 3 July 2011.
